The outlet, on Renny’s Lane, Dragonville Industrial Park in the town, is designed as a one-stop-shop for tradesmen and DIY enthusiasts alike and offers advice to customers on all aspects of building work.
It is the 41st branch opened by the Hull-based firm (the UK’s leading independent builder's merchant) as part of an ongoing expansion drive that could see up to six new outlets open this year. It joins others in the North East at Stockton, Darlington, Hartlepool, Morpeth, Hexham and Alnwick to complete company’s stronghold in the region.
Joint branch director Paul Brooks said the Durham outlet would diversify the local offering to builders and DIY enthusiasts and introduce a more customer friendly way of doing business. "MKM has built its reputation on high levels of customer service compared to what other parts of the industry routinely offer."
"That has allowed the firm to expand rapidly and build a solid brand in the places where it operates, particularly the North East, where is has a significant number of outlets. We are expecting the Durham to trade well from the beginning because the brand is well known around here and our expectation is that local builders will be pleased to finally have an MKM in their area."
MKM Building Supplies operates a profit-share arrangement with the branch directors ensuring it is in their interests to be successful, and encourages progression among staff members who want to move their career’s forward.
Founder and executive chairman, David Kilburn, said he was always proud to create news jobs across the UK.
Mr Kilburn said: "The North East is a fantastic area with warm and friendly people and we feel the MKM way of doing business, which centres around offering a more personal and tailored service that you would expect from an independent, suites it well.
“It is an important market for us and one that by creating these jobs we are proud to be investing in. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to further our association with the area and its people.”
