A patio used to refer to an inner courtyard, open to the air. Patios (for those of us without a courtyard) are now firmly fixed as a key element of any garden design. For entertaining, dining or just plain relaxing - they’re hard to beat.
Normally formed from paving flags or slabs, patios can also be created from block paving , or even tiles, to create that more mediterranean feel. Whilst the traditional concrete gray slab may suit your purpose, other colour ways now available mean you can truly theme your outside areas.
A wide selection of styles give you texture and shape options too. Riven paving aims to recreate the old style pavers (or paviours) with a more uneven ‘natural’ surface reflecting the old hand finished nature of stone. Textured and decorative paving continue the choice but with more regular surfaces.
If you need walling, the choices are equally tantalising. Colours reflect paving choices in many cases, allowing you to blend walled and patio areas seamlessly. Walling products are often referred to as ‘pitched face’ or ‘split face’. A pitched face has generally been finished with some form of tool creating texture, a split face is where the finish has been created by actual splitting, leaving the face as it is.
Don’t forget to choose a coping to bring the perfect finishing touch to your wall or gateway.
