Whenever you're thinking of purchasing a lintel for any building, it's important to know the benefits of each product on offer. With both steel and concrete options available at MKM Building Supplies, the last thing you want to do is confuse the two and end up trying to form an arched design out of immovable concrete.

When it comes to choosing the perfect lintel for the job, it's probably best to start with a steel option as opposed to a concrete fitting. The benefits of steel far outweigh concrete, however both have their uses when it comes to building a domestic or industrial project.

In its most basic form, the benefits of using a steel lintel can be attributed to its lightweight and durable characteristics. Given that steel lintels are far lighter than their concrete counterparts, they are much easier to manoeuvre around the site and therefore less likely to damage either you or your build. Steel lintels also present a case for straight brickwork around a given opening – thus maintaining a consistent finish to any external brickwork.

However, if you're looking at fitting a lintel around an arched doorway or bay window, a concrete lintel may be more suited to the job. Offering rigidity in your building's weakest areas, a concrete lintel will provide much greater foundation on which you can style your brickwork.

As well as their structural uses, lintels play a pivotal role in terms of reducing heat loss. Stopping issues surrounding thermal-bridging, lintels can provide an array of uses outside of their common remit. So the next time you're in need of a lintel for your project, be sure to speak to a trained MKM advisor who will gladly point you in the right direction!
