As the single biggest fitting in the bathroom, choosing the right bath is of utmost importance: it needs to fit comfortably into the space available without obstructing people's movement around the room, while also being large enough for its users and, not least, looking attractive too.

It may be tempting to choose the first bathtub you like the look of, but it's well worth taking the time to consider the size, shape and material you want and pick out one that's perfect for your needs and your home. Most baths are rectangular, but L-shaped, P-shaped and other types are also available, and might provide a better fit for your particular bathroom.

Acrylic is a popular material for bathtubs as it's durable, lightweight and easy to maintain. Cast polymer baths are protected with a gel coating, although this is slightly less hardwearing than acrylic. Other options include cultured marble, fiberglass and enamelled steel and cast iron – these all have their own attributes that may affect your decision.

Also think about whether you want a single-ended or double-ended bath – single-ended units are the ones with taps at one end and a curved back rest at the other, while double-ended baths usually have their taps in the middle and are curved at both ends.

Another consideration is water capacity: if you like your baths deep and luxurious, bear in mind they'll use more hot water, while if you're keen on saving water and energy you might prefer to get a shallower bath.

Finally, if you find the ideal bath but it doesn't quite fit the colour scheme for your bathroom, never fear! Bath panels are available in a wide variety of colours and textures, and these are often all you need to make any bathtub blend seamlessly into your dream design.
