MKM Beverley Brave the Shave for Macmillan

Six people at a Beverley builders’ merchant have raised over £1,600 by participating in the ‘Brave the Shave’ campaign in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The group completed the feat at MKM Building Supplies’ Beverley branch, led by employee Allan Medhurst. He was joined by his colleagues Lee Gale, Andy Beet, Lewis Palin, Jamie Newman and Marc Rowson, all of whom ‘Braved the Shave’ at the hands of another team member, Katie Newman.

The idea was born when Allan’s wife Pam was diagnosed with Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. With chemotherapy on the cards, Allan told Pam that if she was to lose her hair, he may as well do the same, she said: “Well if you are going to do it, at least raise some money!” That’s where Macmillan’s Brave the Shave came in.

Allan led the way and was soon joined in his pledge by five other colleagues at MKM Beverley. On the day itself, Pam was on hand with her famous home-made chocolate cake and ginger biscuits to fuel the fun. Allan and the gang raised funds using an official donation page and sponsorship forms. Thanks to the kind contributions of friends as well as colleagues at MKM Beverley, Allan has raised over £1,500, with Lee raising over £110 to date.

Brave the Shave is a fundraising initiative launched by Macmillan Cancer Support. As well as raising funds for research, the campaign aims to boost awareness for, and support those going through the difficult experience of appearance changes as a result of cancer treatment.

Allan said: “With the news of Pam’s lymphoma diagnosis and chemotherapy, I wasn’t going to let her lose her hair by herself! I was overwhelmed by the support of my colleagues, they were great sports.

“Despite losing our flowing locks, everyone had fun – we’re absolutely delighted to have raised such a great amount of money. Everyone involved is honoured to be supporting the vital work Macmillan do for those affected by cancer.”
