MKM collects over £8000 for Bobby Moore Fund
We are celebrating the success of our recent fundraising efforts for Cancer Research UK.

Over the past few months, our 36 branches raised a collective total of £8062, by selling World Cup flags for a £2 donation and holding in-store fundraising events. The money will be given to the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK, which raises money for research into bowel cancer.

MKM Darlington raised the most funds out of all the MKM branches nationwide, by collecting a total of £1000. The Darlington team is always willing to take part, as Tony Walton, MKM Darlington’s Branch Director, explains:

“The team is really pleased that they managed to raise the most funds out of the whole company. We held lots of events over the World Cup period such as raffles and lucky dips which involved our staff, customers and suppliers. In fact, some of our suppliers made generous donations so I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their help.

“Our customers really enjoy participating, so we regularly hold fund raising events when major football tournaments take place. In the past we have raised a similar amount for a local hospice here in Darlington and it’s very rewarding to know you are making a difference.”

Lindsay Kay, Cancer Research UK’s Area Volunteer Manager, said: “We are extremely grateful to everyone at MKM for their fantastic fundraising effort. By using the excitement around the 2010 World Cup to remember one of football’s heroes, Bobby Moore, who sadly died of bowel cancer, they successfully encouraged both staff and customers to raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund.

“Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK after breast and lung cancer, with almost 100 people diagnosed with the disease every day. But when bowel cancer is found early more than nine out of ten people will survive the disease for more than five years. The money raised for the Bobby Moore Fund is spent on high-quality bowel cancer research carried out by leading scientists working across the UK. It also helps raise public awareness of the disease, its symptoms and prevention.”

MKM’s Chief Executive, David Kilburn comments:

“We want to extend our thanks to all of the MKM employees and customers who helped to make our latest fundraising initiative a great success. We are delighted to have raised such a significant amount for the Bobby Moore Fund - the response from our customers was fantastic!”

The Bobby Moore Fund was established by Stephanie Moore MBE in partnership with Cancer Research UK in 1993. It was set up in memory of Stephanie’s late husband, Bobby Moore OBE, who sadly died of bowel cancer, aged just 51. To date, the charity has raised over £14m to fund research into bowel cancer and raise public awareness of the disease.
