Festive fund raising a great success
We would like to thank all of our customers and suppliers that helped to make our festive fundraising activities a great success during December. Not only did we help to send 1,200 disadvantaged children to the theatre for a night of thespian fun, we also managed to raise a fantastic £1,870.50 for the charity ‘When You Wish upon a Star’.

Our Edinburgh branch raised the most money overall, however each of our 36 branches took part and did a fantastic job. Unfortunately some fund raising activities, such as Santa walks, had to be cancelled in December due to the snow and ice – but our guess the humbug competition still managed to raise lots of money.

Each branch had their own jar of humbugs and customers were asked to pay £1 to guess how many were in the jar. Each branch winner that guessed correctly was entered into a national prize draw to win a winter holiday. The lucky winner was S4 Developments from Stockton,  who won Thomas Cook vouchers,  so they could pick the destination of their choice. Congratulations!

Our customers were treated too, because every day we gave away a festive treat to the first 25 customers to enter each of our branches. The gifts were sponsored by our suppliers so we would like to take this opportunity to thank all that donated gifts.

Our fund raising was in aid of two very worthy charities – When You Wish upon a Star and Hull Truck Theatre’s The Gift of Christmas. ‘When You Wish upon a Star’ aims to grant the wishes of children suffering from life threatening illnesses from the age of two to sixteen. The money raised by MKM helped to send these children to Lapland on the 9th December to meet the real Santa and his Reindeer, and assisted in the granting of other wishes for children who didn’t make the Lapland trip.

Hull Truck Theatre’s ‘The Gift of Christmas’ helps to send disadvantaged children, who really need a break, to the theatre. A donation was made by MKM to assist in sending them to see ‘A Christmas Carol’ at Hull Truck Theatre. These children are either in foster care, residential care, the siblings of disabled children or young carers. They simply don’t have the advantages that other children do.

David Kilburn, MKM’s Chief Executive, was delighted to support the children’s charity, When You Wish upon a Star, throughout our Twelve Days of Christmas campaign, and despite the consequences of the arctic conditions in December, raised the sum of £1,870.50, with the support of our customers.

The charity works tirelessly to grant wishes and make dreams come true for children with life threatening illnesses, and whether the wishes are big or small, their fulfilment bring smiles to the faces of sick children and make memories that can last a life time. We wish the charity every success for 2011 and look forward to supporting them again in the coming year.
