Young Enterprise Success!
MKM shows its support for local young entrepreneurs

MKM’s management team is celebrating, after a local Young Enterprise group, which is mentored by MKM’s Managing Director Bill Acton, was recognised for its achievements at a recent awards ceremony. The group, called ‘Timber Tek’, was presented the top award for ‘Environmental Awareness’ and ‘Best Display Stand’ at the Young Enterprise Humber regional finals.

Timber Tek, made up of students from Hull College, manufactured plant pot stands made entirely from recycled wood. They used off-cuts of wood from the college’s trainee joinery apprenticeship course and have sold products at Hull College and local shopping centre, Princes Quay.

Bill Acton comments: “I’m delighted with Timber Tek’s success – they have made a profit out of manufacturing completely sustainable and environmentally-friendly products without any prior business knowledge.
“It’s very rewarding to be part of a scheme that helps youngsters to come out of their shell and focus their skills. The team easily overcame challenges and were very enthusiastic throughout the whole process. They received great support from the college lecturers and I’m very proud of their achievements at the recent award ceremony.

“The Young Enterprise programme is an ideal initiative to motivate youngsters and show them how easy it is to run a business. These students are our entrepreneurs of the future and we must nurture their talent at a young age, to give them the confidence to step out into the world of business once they have completed their education.”

MKM is committed to the Young Enterprise programme and several members of the management team are actively involved including MKM's Human Resources Manager, Beverley Parry and Commercial Manager, Jon Samuel who have both mentored past teams. In fact, Jon mentored the Humber sub region winning team for 2008. Beverley has also been involved in the judging process for the Humber sub region competition and runs an HR workshop each year for students new to the programme, to give them an insight into the role of HR within an organisation.

Chief Executive, David Kilburn, is also heavily involved with Young Enterprise and is a member of the Young Enterprise Volunteer Board and regularly helps with fundraising. He also plays an important role in the Young Enterprise Yorkshire & Humber ‘who wants to be an entrepreneur’ competition, which is based upon the BBC’s ‘The Apprentice’ show. David has taken on the Alan Sugar role at the head of the boardroom and helps participants to develop their entrepreneurial flair.
