MKM Heart Challenge
MKM lose nearly 1 ton in weight and raise over £7000 for the British Heart Foundation!

MKM Building Supplies branches across the UK recently completed the MKM Heart Challenge, improving their health and raising over 7,000 for the British Heart Foundation in the process.

The eight-week event, which took place from 4th January to 26th February, was developed in support of the British Heart Foundations annual fundraising campaign Red for Heart.

Teams of employees and staff from the merchants 36 branches competed in the challenge, aimed at improving their health and fitness.

Each member of a team created their own individual health goals, which included losing weight, reducing their blood pressure, stopping smoking and taking more exercise. Key health measurements including body mass index, weight, blood pressure and hip to waist ratio were taken each week throughout the competition and branches competed for top position on the league table

The overall winner was MKM in Beverley, East Yorkshire, who improved the most over the eight weeks. The branch consistently worked hard each week to improve their health and also raised over 500 for the charity.

Andy Beet, director of the branch in Beverley, commented, The British Heart Foundation is a fantastic charity, which deserves our support. We thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the MKM challenge and competing with the other branches across the UK.

Several branch teams also organised fitness related events to raise additional sponsorship, whilst simultaneously improving their health. The Bridlington branch cycled 1000 miles and raised over 1000 for the British Heart Foundation, whilst the Redcar team walked a total of 20 miles, from Whitby to Saltburn, raising over 1500 in the process.

The challenge helped to improve the health of employees and customers across the UK. Overall, across all the branches, MKM lost a staggering 879kg in weight and 561 inches around the waist.

Lucy Watson of the British Heart Foundations said, MKM have done extremely well. The teams have worked really hard over the past eight weeks, both to raise funds and improve their own health. Heart Disease is the nations biggest killer and its fantastic that MKM are supporting the British Heart Foundation in its efforts to reduce the prevalence of the disease.

David Kilburn, Chief Executive of MKM, who also took part in the challenge, was delighted that so many staff got in involved. This event has really captured the imagination. I got on board straight away and Ive lost over 10lbs, which incidentally is more than Bill Acton, the MD, who lost our bet in the process! Well hopefully be able to do this as an annual event we take the health of our staff very seriously and will do anything to encourage a healthier lifestyle.
